Introduction: Concern!
Every adult Nigerian ought to be interested in the peaceful co-existence of the various ethnic and religious groups in the country. There is no doubt about the fact that ethnic and religious disharmony and conflicts are destructive and would render real development a virtually unattainable dream. Therefore, the fact that the ever-increasing security challenges that we encounter in Nigeria today assume a religious dimension should be source of great concern for every adult Nigerian. But it is more so for Nigerian Muslims because those believed to be behind the recent attacks and killings are Muslim and are said to believe they are doing it all on behalf of Islam.

INTRODUCTION
This National Symposium on “ISLAM AND PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE IN A CONTEMPORARY MULTI-RELIGIOUS SOCIETY” organised by NASFAT is most welcome. Islam is a religion of peace, built on peace and sustained by peace. Nigeria is passing through a period of religious, sectarian, ethnic and political turmoil and whatever could be done to arrest the situation, should be done. Such a Symposium will assist in bringing the unsavoury Nigerian situation under control; therefore the organisers must be commended for taking the bold initiatives.

Inviting the sect for fresh parley, Vice President Sambo, who  made the call at the National Symposium: ‘Islam and Peaceful Coexistence in a Contemporary Multi Religious State,’ organised by Nasirul-Lahi-Faith Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) in Abuja, said “history has proven that even wars that are fought for decades, at the end, are only concluded by dialogue.”

His call came as the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of Nigerian Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Alhaji Sa’adi Abubakar III, called on the Federal Government to hold those, who issued public threat to cause chaos responsible and make them face the consequence of their action.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun has called for the establishment of a Ministry of Northern Affairs or an agency to address issues relating to illiteracy, unemployment and poverty in northern Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that he made the call on Thursday in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at the 2012 National Symposium of Nasrul-lahi-l- Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT).

He said that the creation of an agency or a ministry akin to the Ministry of Niger Delta would go a long way in addressing the current security challenge facing Nigeria, which had its roots in some northern parts of the country.
